SICKLE  CELL ANAEMIA RESEARCH

An Indian Council of Medical Research supported three-year project aimed at determining thr prevalence and distribution of sickle cell anaemia among scheduled tribes (garasias) of Sirohi district, Rajasthan, came to an end on October 15, 2009. The project was implemented by our ex-paediatrician Dr Sanjay Mandot and the chief of our village outreach programme and consultantgynaecologist Dr Vinay Laxmi Khurana. The study also involved research into the clinical and haematological profile of sickle cell disease, and where possible, studied the effect of preventive measures like penicillin prophylaxis, hematinics (folate), vaccination and health education. During the period from April 2009 to October 15 2009, 1908 tribals were screened of which 18 were found to be suffering from sickle cell disease (SS, homozygous state) and 215 tribals suffered from the sickle cell trait (AS, heterozygous state). A few of the diseased patients were admitted for treatment and blood transfusions. These patients are offered follow-uptreatment and ongoing advice to manage their illness as and when they visit the out-patient clinic.
